A story for every victim

Salvador Palencia, 42

Salvador Palencia, also known as Salvador Palencia-Cruz, a 42-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, April 25, in the 3800 block of East 56th Street in Maywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Around 11:06 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a man attempting to commit suicide, according to an L.A. County sheriff’s department statement.

When deputies arrived they saw Palencia holding in his right hand a long metal object that resembled a knife, authorities said.

Palencia allegedly brandished the metal object at the deputies and threatened to use it to cause them physical harm.

He then grabbed a second long metal object, which appeared to be a knife, from the kitchen area and pointed it at the deputies, who ordered him numerous times to put the object down, according to the statement.

"The suspect instead began to advance toward the deputies, wielding the object in hand," the statement said. "Fearing for their safety, the deputies shot the suspect."

Palencia was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:32 p.m.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips can be made by dialing Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
