A story for every victim

Samuel Alejandro Estrada, 41

Samuel Alejandro Estrada, a 41-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Tuesday, Oct. 15, on Atlantic Avenue underneath the 710 Freeway overpass in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

A motorist driving by the area about 11:40 a.m. noticed two men beating a third man, later identified as Estrada, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.

"They were jumping him near the shoulder of the roadway," Alfred said. "The victim, Mr. Estrada, was able to get up and stumble away, and that's when one of the suspects produces a handgun and shoots him."

The two assailants ran from the scene and the motorist followed them until they ran into the LA Riverbed and out of sight, Alfred said. The witness called 911 and returned to the shooting scene to try to help Estrada until deputies arrived.

Estrada was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:53 a.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds.

The assailants, described as Latino adults, have not been found and investigators don't have a motive for the attack, Alfred said.

Estrada lived with his family in Long Beach, Alfred said, and had not returned home the night before.
