Samuel Herrera Jr., 41

Samuel Herrera Jr., a Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Sept. 10, by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies in the 500 block of South Bradfield Avenue in Compton, according to law enforcement and county coroner's records.

About 5:36 a.m., detectives from the Sheriff's Department's Operation Safe Streets Bureau were serving a search warrant when they said Herrera "opened fire," according to a department news release.

Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene and a weapon was recovered. The department has placed a security hold on information regarding the case with the coroner's office. The Times will follow up as more information, such as what led to the shooting and Herrera's age, becomes available.
