A story for every victim

Sandra Charlene Jackson, 59

Sandra Charlene Jackson, a 59-year-old white woman, was pronounced dead Saturday, Oct. 6, after she was shot in the 1400 block of West McKinley Avenue in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Her adult children asked Pomona  police to check her residence that morning because they couldn't reach their parents, said Sgt. Jon Edson.

When officers entered the home, they found Jackson and her husband, Vernon Cary Jackson, a 62-year-old white male, in their bedroom, lying on the bed, Edson said.

Jackson lay on her side, with a shotgun wound to the back, according to coroner's records.

Her husband lay beside her with a shotgun wound to the chest. A shotgun was found on the floor on his side of the bed, according to coroner's records, and his death was ruled a suicide.

Sandra Jackson's death was ruled a homicide. Investigators believe Vernon Jackson shot his wife before killing himself. Husband and wife were pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30 p.m., according to coroner's records.

The couple both had children from previous marriages, Edson said. Jackson's son told investigators his mother was planning to leave her husband and come stay with him the day their bodies were found. When she didn't arrive, he became worried and contacted the police.
