A story for every victim

Sandra Del Carmen Polanco, 54

Sandra Del Carmen Polanco, a 54-year-old Latina, was shot and killed Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, in the 11700 block of Floral Drive in Whittier, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

At about 7:30 a.m., Whittier police responded to a call about a woman who was unresponsive at an apartment complex, according to Whittier Police Officer John Scoggins.

Officers arrived and found Polanco on the living room couch with a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.

Polanco was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:30 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Police identified Polanco’s boyfriend of more than 10 years, Rafael Ayala Castillo, a 58-year-old Latino, as a person of interest in the killing.

The two lived together in the apartment where Polanco was found, police said. Later that night, police arrested Castillo on suspicion of murder and he was later charged in the killing.

A jury in November 2018 found Castillo guilty of first-degree murder and also found true special allegations that he intentionally shot Polanco.

Witnesses testified that Castillo and Polanco were having relationship problems before the killing. In January, Castillo was sentenced to 50 years to life for the murder.
