A story for every victim

Shaoyan Almazan, 19

Shaoyan Almazan, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, May 26, near New Hampshire Avenue and San Marino Street in Koreatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Almazan was on his bicycle when he was struck by a white SUV around 1:20 p.m., according to Los Angeles police officer Karen Rayner.

A man then stepped out of the car and fatally shot the bicyclist while he was on the ground, Rayner said. A second cyclist was shot while he was getting away from the scene. He received non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police are searching for three male suspects in a white SUV, Rayner said.

It was not known whether the victims knew one another or whether the second victim was just a passerby, Rayner said.

Witnesses told CBS2 that they saw two men jump out of the SUV and open fire on the first cyclist.

Havanapola Shanti, a Buddhist monk, told the station he was crossing the street and saw the van crash into the first cyclist. Others said the gunmen appeared to intentionally target the cyclist.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call the LAPD at (877) LAPD-24-7. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
