A story for every victim

Steve Lopez, 22

Steve Lopez, a 22-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Sept. 25, in the 1300 block of Los Palos Street in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Hollenbeck Area patrol officers responded to a shooting call about 2:10 a.m., according to an LAPD news release. When officers arrived at the location, they found Lopez lying on the ground unresponsive.

There were other people in the area that appeared to be suffering from other injuries, police said.

Paramedics were called and Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been shot in the head, face and torso, according to coroner's records.

Two other people were hit by gunfire and taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said. Officers at the scene were told that other victims went to the hospital on their own.

During the investigation, officers learned the shooting victims had been attending a large birthday party that began at a house about 9 p.m.

As the party started to wind down in the early morning, some of the partygoers broke into groups and got into a dispute. In the midst of the encounter, gunfire and fighting erupted. Eight victims were shot and three were stabbed, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident should call (877) LAPD-24-7. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).
