A story for every victim

Susan Yang Garcia, 33

Susan Yang Garcia,  a 33-year-old Asian woman, was shot to death Tuesday, Jan. 10, in the 6500 block of Knight Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 7:30 p.m., Long Beach police responded to a call about a couple who had been shot in their home, according to a news release. Officers found Garcia with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was pronounced dead at 7:48 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Her husband had been shot in the head and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, the release said. He was treated and later released.

John Kevin McVoy, 35, was arrested and on Jan. 13 was charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder.

McVoy is accused of arguing with the couple at their home before shooting the husband. Prosecutors say he then shot Garcia while she was holding her toddler. After the shooting, other people in the home disarmed McVoy, prosecutors said.

McVoy is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 30 for an arraignment.
