Thomas Leroy Dunbar Sr. (2013-07-25)

Thomas Leroy Dunbar Sr., an 84-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, July 25, 2013, in the 1000 block of South Northwood Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 10 a.m., Dunbar was sleeping in the front bedroom of his home when he was shot in the head, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The suspects were in a black or dark green sedan.

Dunbar was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:35 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

In January 2015, detectives announced that Brian Alonzo Sawyers, a 21-year-old black man, had been charged with murder.

Sawyers had been in police custody on an unrelated charge since September 2014, according to sheriff’s department online records.
