A story for every victim

Todd Dalon Dunlap, 45

Todd Dunlap, a 45-year-old black man, was found Dec. 31, 2017, with fatal stab wounds in the 900 block of Elm Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Long Beach police responded about 6 a.m. to call about a man down, according to a news release. Police found Dunlap in an alley with an injury to his head, the release said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:23 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Later that day, officers arrested Ernest Weston, 87, and James Leonard Pettie, 58, at the apartment they had shared with Dunlap in the 400 block of 5th Street, less than a mile from the scene, according to officials. Police say Weston stabbed Dunlap and Leonard helped dump the body in the alley. Authorities did not disclose the location of the attack.

Prosecutors charged Weston with murder and possession of a dangerous weapon; Pettie faces a charge of accessory to murder. The men are scheduled to return to court Jan. 18 for arraignment. If convicted as charged, Weston faces a maximum possible sentence of 26 years to life in state prison; Pettie could face three years in county jail.
