I am the mother of Travon Darnell Johnson. My son was shot March 17, 1995 while on his way home from Dockweiler Beach. He and a very good friend Arkett Mejia, who was in the service got a pass to come home to celebrate her parents 25th wedding anniversary. Being that her and Travon were good friends she always contacted him when she was in town. So they made arrangements with another couple to go out Friday evening. Some low life gangbangers followed them on the 105 freeway and shot up the car that he was in. His longtime friend Arkett did not make it. My son Travon, was in a coma and paralyzed from the neck down for many years. He passed away last year March 14, 2013. He was a good kid, who was a student at El Camino College. He was not into drugs, gang banging and none of that foolish stuff. He loved life and was very close to his family. He stayed away from trouble. But unfortunately trouble came to him. As a result of this he spent the remaining years of his life in a coma and paralyzed. Both the driver and the shooter were caught and prosecuted. First trial was a hung jury in Torrance and of course we had to appeal, the second trial both were prosecuted. I do hope they re-open the case because instead of 3 counts of attempted murder and one count for murder. It is now 2 counts of attempted murder and 2 counts of murder. But so far no one has contacted me. The sad part is lives were lost. And the people who did this, are still able to breathe, walk, and talk and our taxpaying dollars are providing free room and board for them. To this day my son Travon Darnell Johnson will remain in our hearts forever. I miss him so much but nothing can ever bring him back. I wish the people who did this to him, knew what it was like to have to bury a son. Now I can only visit him at the cemetery. And the sad part in all of this is, murders like these are still happening to this day. "Victims of violent crimes, yes we are, why does it always have to happen to good people?"
