A story for every victim

Yolanda Kennard, 16

Yolanda Kennard, a 16-year-old black female, was stabbed on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in the 4000 block of South Buckingham Road in South Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Kennard was standing on a sidewalk with her mother and other family members when she approached a woman in a wheelchair, police said.

The woman stabbed Kennard in the right side of her chest, and Kennard was taken to a hospital, where she later died, police said. Kennard's mother came to her aid and another woman stabbed the mother in the head. The mother recovered from her injuries.

Treana Turner, 30, has been charged with Kennard's murder and pleaded not guilty at an arraignment on April 17, officials said. Pamela Johnson, 54, was charged with the attempted murder of Kennard's mother and also pleaded not guilty, officials said.

Turner and Johnson are scheduled to appear in court again April 29.
