A story for every victim

Allen Edgardo Pena, 22

Allen Edgardo Pena, a 22-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Sept. 13, in the 300 block of East 67th Street in Long Beach, according to authorities.

Pena, who lived in Compton, was found lying in an alley with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:35 a.m.

Long Beach Police investigators did not find a weapon or a note at the scene, and the coroner’s office later ruled the death a homicide, according to coroner’s records.

On Sept. 22, two men were arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with Pena’s death, with the special allegation that the shooting was committed "for the benefit of, at the direction of, and in association with a criminal street gang," according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Michael Coronado, a 24-year-old Latino from Long Beach, and David Rios, a 23-year-old Latino from Compton, were charged with murder Sept. 24, according to prosecutors.

Coronado was also charged with one count of attempted murder in connection with an unrelated shooting in Long Beach on Sept. 7 and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to records from the district attorney's office.

Coronado was convicted of possessing methamphetamine for sale in 2011, according to the records.  He is being held in Los Angeles County Jail in lieu of $4 million bail.

Rios is being held in the same jail in lieu of $2 million bail.

The arraignments for both men were originally scheduled for Oct. 8, but they have been continued to Oct. 21 in the Los Angeles County Superior Court's Long Beach Courthouse, Department S01.
