A story for every victim

Angelica Maldonado, 8

Angelica Maldonado, an 8-year-old white girl, was killed by a gunshot to the head in a murder-suicide incident in a townhome at 18044 West Annes Circle in Canyon Country. Her mother, Crystal Burton, 24, a white woman, was killed in the same incident.

Police called it a murder-suicide committed by the child's grandfather, Richard Boyd Burton, 52, who also was found dead at the scene. Crystal Burton died at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 1.

Neighbors reported hearing gunshots at about 4:30 a.m. the morning of May 1, but police searched the area and could not find the source. That evening, about 9:30 p.m., a neighbor who shares a balcony with the family saw one of the victims through the window, apparently injured. This neighbor and another broke down the front door of the family's unit and found the bodies.
