A story for every victim

Anthony Mendoza Lopez, 20

Anthony Mendoza Lopez, a 20-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Saturday, Oct. 20, in the 100 block of South Holly Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Lopez, a resident of Long Beach, was a guest at a large birthday party at a residence on South Holly Avenue, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Scott Hoglund.

More than 100 people were at the party, which included a live band, Hoglund said, but about 1 a.m., "something transpired and it resulted in a shooting."

Lopez was one of two people struck by the gunfire, Hoglund said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:15 a.m. The other victim, a 19-year-old Latino, was taken to the hospital where he is expected to survive his injuries.

Investigators do not have a description of the shooter or what prompted the gunfire, Hoglund said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
