Candice Barcenas, a 26-year-old black woman, died Tuesday, May 20, after she was shot in the 200 block of North Spring Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on May 19, a 20-year-old man was riding his bike in the area and a gunman began shooting at him, said Lt. Dave Coleman with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Barcenas heard the gunfire at a nearby home and walked up to a screen door to watch when she was struck by a stray round, Coleman said.

A 32-year-old man standing in the carport area was also struck. The 20-year-old man on the bike -- the intended target -- was not injured.

Barcenas was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. on May 20. The 32-year-old man was also taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

Barcenas leaves behind an infant, Coleman said. About 20 rounds were fired in the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
