Daniel Pete Ramirez, a 19-year-old Latino male, died Sunday, Jan. 1, after being shot in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

I met Daniel at UC Berkeley. Being both from LA, there weren’t many of us at Cal. He was quiet and focused on his studies. He was very shy and didn’t like to talk about himself much. You had to be patient and persistent. He needed to know you were going to care before he trusted you.

He did dress in long white shirts and baggy jeans and that made it harder for him to make friends at Cal. Some assumed he was just a fluke (as if he didn’t work hard to get to Cal) but he was very determined to remain true to himself and get through school. Being in our first semester, it was a rough time. He was looking forward to going home that holiday; not only to be with his family but also to be with friends and at home.

It still haunts me that I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye at the end of that fall semester. He never came back. He died 3.5 miles from my parent’s home. I’ve never forgotten him and I still reflect on what a tragedy his death was. He had goals and dreams which were truncated just as he was starting. He was a young kid at 19, celebrating the start of a new year, and just like that, in a blink of an eye, he was gone.

I was so angry that UC Berkeley and our dorms never really acknowledged his death. But I’ve always remembered and think of him often.

Rest In Peace and Power, Daniel. You’re still remembered.
