Daryl Eugene Gatewood, a 27-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday Aug. 23 in the 5400 block of South Central Avenue in Central-Alameda, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 6:30 p.m.,  a gunman opened fire on Gatewood and another man who were riding motorized bicycles, said Los Angeles Police Lt. E. Imaizumi.

Gatewood was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The other man, who was shot in the leg as he held up his hands, is expected to survive.

“We don’t know if it was a robbery or not,” Imaizumi said. The men “looked like regular guys” out for a ride.

The gunman was last seen walking north on South Central Avenue, although he could have fled in a car.
