David Raymond Bernal, 25

David Raymond Bernal, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot and killed on Sunday, Jan. 28, in the 15400 block of Lefloss Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Bernal and a friend, David Kirk Vergara, 27, were in the backyard of a Norwalk home in the early morning when Vergara showed Bernal a rifle, according to a Los Angeles County district attorney’s office news release.

The rifle discharged about 4:26 a.m., and Bernal was shot in the head, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore. He was pronounced dead at 4:29 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Both men were drunk at the time of the shooting, Moore said, adding that he didn’t know whether either lived at the house.

Vergara was arrested at the scene, Moore said. On Jan. 30, he was charged with involuntary manslaughter and discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, according to the district attorney’s office.

He pleaded not guilty and is being held in lieu of $1.035 million bail, according to court records. Vergara’s next court appearance is Feb. 26.
