A story for every victim

Deontae Deshon Ruffin, 24

Deontae Deshon Ruffin, a 24-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, Feb. 29, in the 1500 block of West 57th Street in Harvard Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 2 p.m., Ruffin was sitting in a car when a light-colored sedan pulled up, said LAPD Det. Dave Garrido.

A person got out of the front passenger side of the sedan and fired into the back seat, where Ruffin was sitting, Garrido said.

The person then got back into the sedan, which fled north on South Denker Avenue.

Ruffin was pronounced dead at a hospital at 2:26 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

LAPD Det. Chris Barling, who heads the 77th Division homicide squad, called Ruffin’s killing a case of “mistaken identity.”

Barling said the homicide is gang-related in the sense that the suspects are believed to be gang members.

Ruffin, however, was not a gang member.
