Donald Handy, 68

Donald Handy, a 68-year-old white man, was shot and killed by a deputy Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the 44900 block of Spearman Avenue in Lancaster, according to L.A. County coroner's records.

Deputies went to a home to serve a narcotics search warrant at 9:30 p.m. when Handy suddenly came out of a bedroom holding a 4-foot sword, said Lt. Mary Leef of the Sheriff's Department.

Handy raised the sword at a deputy, who then fired multiple shots at him.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital, Leef said. Coroner’s records show Handy died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Three other people in the home were detained without incident.
