A story for every victim

Douglas Henry Wooley, 27

Douglas Henry Wooley, a 27-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, March 6, near East 97th Street and South Main Street in Broadway-Manchester, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Wooley was walking north on Main Street about 10 a.m. and crossed at East 97th Street, said LAPD Det. Nathan Kouri. Wooley had gotten to the northwest corner when at least one person got out of a light-colored car and shot at Wooley multiple times.

The car then fled west on East 97th Street, Kouri said.

Wooley was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:58 a.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman. An autopsy showed that Wooley died of a gunshot wound, Winter said.

The shooting was part of several in the area and has been attributed to a gang feud between Crips, Kouri said.

Joe Harris, 76, has a shop near where Wooley was killed. The shooting left a tire on Harris' Ford F-150 flat.

Harris said that Wooley was a familiar fixture in the neighborhood and would mostly walk around with his head down.

"Why would they shoot that guy," Harris said, "when that guy didn't bother anybody?"
