A story for every victim

Fernando Lino Ortiz III, 26

Fernando Lino Ortiz III, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, March 26, near East 8th Street and Marietta Street in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Ortiz was walking through a two-story apartment complex with a woman about 3:10 p.m. when three Eighth Street gang members approached and asked Ortiz where he was from, said LAPD Det. Jose Ramirez.

Ortiz said he was from "Puente," and the gang members — a woman, a man and a teenager — walked away, but returned within seconds. The teenage boy prompted the gunman to shoot, and Ortiz was hit multiple times.

The three then took the cellphone of the woman with Ortiz and fled on foot, Ramirez said.

Soledad Hernandez, a 25-year-old Latina, and Juan Jose Juarez, a 16-year-old Latino, have been charged with one count of murder, one count of conspiracy to commit a crime, one count of assault, and one count of second-degree robbery, according to a criminal complaint. A third person is still at large.

Hernandez and Juarez are due in court April 11 for an arraignment.
