Jose Andres Escobar, 19

Jose Andres Escobar, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Jan. 10, near Crenshaw Boulevard and West 59th Street in Hyde Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 7 a.m., Escobar and a friend were in the area collecting aluminum cans, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department. Escobar and his friend were walking east on West 59th and were near the center median of Crenshaw when a man walked up to them and shouted “Where you from?”

The man pulled out a gun and shot Escobar, who was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
