Jose Anthony Elortegui, 29

Jose Anthony Elortegui (2017-03-07)

Jose Anthony Elortegui, a 29-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, March 7, in the 5100 block of Beechwood Avenue in Lynwood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Elortegui lived with his grandmother and sister, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Troy Ewing, and usually kept to himself because he didn’t want any involvement with the gangs in his neighborhood.

Investigators believe Elortegui was going to a corner store near his home that evening around 7:45 p.m. when a car — possibly white SUV — pulled up beside him on Beechwood Avenue and the passenger in the front seat began shooting, Ewing said.

The car drove away westbound on Beechwood. Elortegui kept walking west for a short distance until he collapsed on the sidewalk near Beechwood and Virginia avenues, Ewing said. A passerby found him bleeding and called 911.

Elortegui was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:55 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the chest.

Numerous shell casings were found at the scene, Ewing said.

Investigators don’t have any information about the gunman or a motive for the shooting.

Elortegui wasn’t a gang member, Ewing said, but his shooting could have been a case of mistaken identity.

Anyone with information is asked to call Ewing or Det. Theo Baljet at the Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
