A story for every victim

Juan Miranda, 18 [Updated]

Juan Miranda, an 18-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Friday, Jan. 14, in the 7800 block of South Eastern Avenue in Bell Gardens, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Miranda was standing outside with people about 11:03 p.m. when a car drove by and shots were fired at the group, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

Authorities were called and Miranda was pronounced dead at the scene. According to coroner's records, he was shot in the chest and back.

Winter had no additional details about the shooting.

The Times has contacted detectives to obtain more information about the shooting and will post an update as soon as details become available.

[Updated Jan. 19: Det. Mitch Robison, a sheriff’s homicide detective who is handling the case, said another person was shot twice during the same incident. Robison described the other victim’s injuries as “through and through” gunshot wounds. The person has since been treated and released from the hospital, he said.

Robison said authorities do not have a description of the shooter or the getaway vehicle that they consider reliable enough to release. Detectives are still trying to determine if the killing was gang-related, he said.

The shooting was detected through use of Shot Spotter technology, a gunshot location system used by the county. Through acoustic sensors, the detection device notifies law enforcement of the location where gunshots are fired.

Anyone with information about the shooting death of Juan Miranda is asked to contact Det. Robison at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.]
