A story for every victim

Leopoldo Anaya, 19

Leopoldo Anaya, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Oct. 29, near Winchester and Concord avenues in Alhambra, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Just after midnight, officers received reports of shots fired. When they arrived in the area, they found no one, but discovered shell casings on the ground.

A short time later, they received a call from hospital officials at County-USC Medical Center reporting that Anaya had been brought in by two friends in a Ford Explorer. He was pronounced dead soon after his arrival.

Coroner's records show Anaya, of El Sereno, died from a single gunshot wound to the torso.

Alhambra Police Sgt. Joe Flannagan said one of Anaya's friends in the car ran off, but the driver remained at the hospital. He was questioned by officers and said he and his friends had just come from a Halloween party. It's unclear if an incident at the party sparked the shooting, Flannagan said.

“We’re thinking it’s a gang-related shooting; it appears to be a car-to-car drive-by,” he said.

He said shots were exchanged between the Ford Explorer and a black Honda sedan. Authorities are searching for the Honda.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Alhambra investigators at (626) 308-4844. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
