Marco Ernesto Avila, 33

Marco Ernesto Avila, a 33-year-old Latino man, was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting at the intersection of Watson Avenue and L Street in Wilmington about 8:55 p.m. Thursday, March 13.

According to police, gang enforcement officers from LAPD's South Bureau saw Avila allegedly committing a traffic violation. Officers pulled him over, then Avila dropped his bicycle and began fighting with officers.

Police said Avila fired several rounds from a weapon he had concealed in his pocket. Officers Enrique Lopez and James Stover fired back. Avila was hit several times. He was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, where he was pronounced dead at 9:21 p.m.

Police said a blue steel .380-caliber semi-automatic pistol was recovered at the scene.
