A story for every victim

Rogelio Islas-Morales, 42

Rogelio Islas-Morales, a 42-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, June 20, in the 800 block of West School Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 2:45 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the frontyard of a home, said Lt. Dave Coleman with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Islas-Morales was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:51 p.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman.

Investigators learned that the families of the victim and the gunman were involved in a two-year feud. Witnesses recognized the voices of Islas-Morales and the gunman, then heard several gunshots, Coleman said.

The gunman, described as a juvenile Latino, was last seen getting into a champagne-colored Ford Expedition with other people. The SUV fled west on West School Street.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
