Vouthy Tho, 21
Vouthy Tho, a 21-year-old Asian man, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, after he was shot in the 1200 block of East 7th Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Tho was at a backyard barbecue with family and friends on Oct. 18, when a hooded man sprang from behind a backyard fence and opened fire, The Times reported.
He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead the following morning, with a gunshot wound to the head, according to coroner’s records.
Tho’s family — his mother, two sisters and brother, immigrated to the Long Beach area from Cambodia to escape the Khmer Rouge regime.
He was crowned prom king at Woodrow Wilson High School in 2001 and dreamed of a career in rap or undersea welding, according to The Times.
Nearly 13 years later, Tho’s oldest sister, Vantha Tho, 35, was killed on July 28, 2016, when her estranged boyfriend broke into her room and shot her in the head before turning the gun on himself.
Vouthy Tho’s killing has not been solved. Anyone with information is asked to call the Long Beach Police Department’s homicide division at (562) 570-7244. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
