Sandra Adele Shells, a 70-year-old Black female, died Sunday, Jan. 16, after sustaining blunt force trauma near East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue & North Vignes Street in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.
Jason Alexander Lopez, a 22-year-old Latino male, died Monday, Oct. 14, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.
Tony Young, a 64-year-old Chinese man, was fatally stabbed Thursday, Jan. 26, at 428 Gin Ling Way in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 2:30 p.m., a man entered the Hop Sing Tong Benevolent Assn. and demanded that Kim Kong Yun, 64, who was playing mah-jongg, give him $400 to pay for vehicle impound fees.
When Yun refused, the suspect pulled out a 6-inch knife and attacked him and Young, who tried to defend Yun, police said. The suspect slashed both of the men in the neck.
Yun and Young were pronounced dead at 3 p.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.
“It was personal and isolated,” said LAPD Det. Patricia Hauck who heads up the Central Division homicide unit. “We don’t know if he planned to go there and kill somebody. ... He came back over and over again recently.”

Jose Rodriguez, a 34-year-old Latino, was stabbed to death Monday, Jan. 2, in the 100 block of Leroy Street in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records and police.
About 5:30 p.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call of a man suffering from stab wounds and found Rodriguez, said LAPD Det. Doug Pierce.
Police determined that there had been a dispute between Rodriguez and a neighbor which resulted in the stabbing, Pierce said, but he declined to elaborate.
Rodriguez was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Jose Romero-Arevalo, a 29-year-old Latino, was charged Jan. 10 with one count of murder with the allegation that he used a knife as a deadly weapon, according to police and the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Romero-Arevalo is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 30, according to the district attorney’s office.

Larry Hendley, a 60-year-old black man, died on Wednesday, Nov. 4, after he was assaulted at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in the 400 block of Bauchet Street in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Authorities found Hendley inside his cell about 5 a.m. after another inmate alerted deputies. Hendley had sustained blunt-force wounds to head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:35 a.m. An autopsy showed the Hendley had been strangled, according to coroner’s records.
Joaquin Lopez, a 32-year-old Latino, was detained after the incident and charged Nov. 16 with one count of murder. Lopez was being held on two charges from September 2015: one count of spousal abuse and one count of dissuading a witness from reporting a crime, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Brendan Robert Cavanaugh, a 34-year-old white male, died Thursday, April 16, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Albert Novshadyan, identified by the coroner's office as a 20-year-old white man, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, three days after he was assaulted at the Twin Towers Jail in the 400 block of Bauchet Street in Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Novshadyan was an inmate at the time of his death.
He was critically hurt during a fight Feb. 25, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died several days later.
Coroner's records show the victim was beaten by an inmate and suffered severe head trauma.
Sheriff's homicide Det. Ron Duval said the investigation was ongoing, and officials hope to charge someone in connection with the death in the next week.

George Cleggett Jr., a 26-year-old black man, was strangled Friday, Dec. 9, at the Men's Central Jail in the 400 block of Bauchet Street in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Cleggett was found at 12:58 p.m. on the floor of a two-man cell by sheriff's deputies conducting hourly security checks. The victim was not breathing, and medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, according to officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Lt. Mary Leef said the investigation into any potential motive or suspect is continuing.
The inmate, who was being held on a murder charge, was alone when he was discovered, authorities said.
