Basurto, a senior at Walnut High School, was visiting two school friends, who are brothers, at the apartment complex where they lived about 11:30 p.m., said Los Angeles County Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
Two Latinos in their early 20s approached and confronted the young men, Hernandez said. One man pulled out a handgun and demanded to know their gang affiliation, he said.
“The two brothers that live there say they’re not from any gang, and the victim never says anything,” Hernandez said. “So the suspect asks a second time, and they deny it a second time.”

Ernesto Calzadilla, a 27-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, in the 2200 block of Batson Avenue in Rowland Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
On New Year’s Eve, Calzadilla attended a celebration at his friend’s family home. During the party, Michael John Morey fatally shot his son’s bedridden mother, his girlfriend and Calzadilla, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. John Corina. The three victims also included Linda Patricia Merrell, 48, and Betty Jean Morey, 54.
Calzadilla’s friend, Christopher Morey, a 33-year-old white man, wrestled the gun away from his father and shot him once, killing him, officials said.
All four victims were pronounced dead at 8:40 p.m.

Annette Martinez, a 21-year-old Latina, was stabbed to death Sunday, Aug. 16, in the 1900 block of Batson Avenue in Rowland Heights, according to authorities.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies received a call about an assault about 2 a.m. When they arrived they found Martinez, who had a stab wound, lying in the doorway of an apartment, according to a department news release.
Martinez was visiting the apartment with her boyfriend and their two small children, a common occurrance, said Sgt. Tim Cain.
That night, an argument broke out between Martinez and her boyfriend's sister, Lisette Kimberly Moreno, who lived in the apartment. According to Cain, Moreno stabbed Martinez in the neck and then fled.
While waiting for paramedics, Martinez collapsed. She was taken to St. Jude's Medical Center in Fullerton, where she was pronounced dead at 3:21 a.m., according to Orange County coroner records.

Benjamin Alexander Cervantes, a 32-year-old Latino, was fatally stabbed Saturday, Aug. 17, in the 1400 block of Gloriosa Avenue in Rowland Heights, according to the L.A. County coroner’s office.
Cervantes was involved in an argument with another man about 1:26 a.m. when he was stabbed, according to a news release from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
Cervantes died at a hospital at 2:26 a.m., said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner’s office.
Albert Camacho, 30, was arrested on suspicion of murder the same day, according to a news release.
He is being held on $1-million bail and is due in court Tuesday, Aug. 20, according to online Sheriff’s Department records.

Alexander Acosta, a 31-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy Friday, Nov. 26, in the 18500 block of Colima Road in Rowland Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Authorities were called to an apartment after 9 p.m. and then flagged down by a woman who told them that her son, Acosta, was attacking her boyfriend, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Pope.
It was unclear how many deputies rushed into the apartment, but once in there, they saw Acosta “straddling” the woman’s boyfriend and “slashing his head with a meat cleaver," Pope said.
“The deputies ordered the suspect to stop and drop the cleaver several times,” Pope said. “The suspect ignored the deputies’ command and continued slashing the victim.”
One of the deputies then fired his weapon, striking Acosta three times in the torso, Pope said. At that point, authorities said Acosta stopped his …
Yang Yang, a 41-year-old Asian woman, was beaten to death Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the 1700 block of Batson Avenue in Rowland Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Stanley Wang, Yang's husband, called 911 about 12:30 p.m. to report that his wife had been hurt, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
When deputies arrived, they found Yang had suffered blunt-force trauma to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Before her death, Yang was estranged from her husband and had returned to the residence to retrieve some personal items, Saldana said. At that point, the couple reportedly got into a physical altercation.
After the incident, Wang, a 65-year-old man whose race was listed as "other" in jail records, was arrested on suspicion of killing Yang and booked at the sheriff’s Walnut-Diamond Bar station.
