Alexander Michael Zavala, a 28-year-old Black male, died Friday, Oct. 30, after being shot near 3724 Slauson Ave. in View Park-Windsor Hills, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Alex was my cousin. He was unlike any other. Growing up, he was not dealt the best cards in life. He didn’t have a lot. And yet, he never complained about any of it. You never found him in a bad mood. He brought joy and life to the party. Every single family gathering- he had everybody laughing. You couldn’t NOT smile when he was around. I remember one year he spent Christmas with us. We didn’t have a lot of money, but we got him a jersey of his favorite team at the time. He’d never been given something like this and man, you should have seen the joy on his face. It’s a feeling that I will never forget. I always thought, if I could just be like Alex. If I could just have the mindset that he had. Always so happy, even though a lot of the time he didn’t have much. When he was murdered, it left a huge whole in our family. Out of everybody in the world, he was the one who deserved it the least. Truly.
