Chad Jarmel Andrew, 22

July 19, 2010, 12:15 p.m.

Chad Andrew, a 22-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, July 5, in the 4400 block of Western Avenue in Vermont Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Andrew and a 26-year-old male companion pulled into the Valero gas station at Western and Vernon avenues about 3:50 a.m. when they were approached by two suspects and shot, said Los Angeles Police Department Det. Sean Hansen.

Authorities were called and Andrew was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was shot in the arm and chest and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Hansen said.

The assailants, described as two black males, fled the area after the incident, according to an LAPD news release.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related.

Yes we have closure and we have awareness. Young men of today are in a war that they do not even understand its history.

Please reach out in your community and help the lost souls there. Show them by your positive example in life. That's how I would like to see individuals honor my sons life. I saw a documentary on Netflix.com titled, BLOODS & CRIPS MADE IN AMERICA.

Often young men, of single parent homes live a double life. One from the streets to survive and the one they reveal to their mothers at home. I have learned that Gang awareness needs to be brought up to the single mothers attention. Economics, has single mothers trying to survive the bills and jobs and keeping a roof over the family's head.

People talk with your children and take the time to listen, it is too late after they are gone. My heart goes out to all the mothers, fathers and families who have been victimized by such crimes from either side of the event. There can be no peace when a mother or family is suffering through the loss of her child or family member. Please remember young men and young women, 'Your choice has consequences' please be responsible.

SEPTEMBER 29TH, 2014
We have been in Court all of last week. The jury found the defendant guilty as charged.
There was closure, victory and justice for Chad J. Andrew, today.

BUT, this victory came at the expense of another black woman's pain. I saw the pain in another mothers heart right down to her soul. The pain in her eyes as they carted her son back to his quarters, this meant three strikes for him!

No mother should have to experience this type of pain. A mothers love is a Divine Love, closest to Gods love, unconditional, forgiving, overlooking faults, and non forsaking, no matter what he is still her child.

I urge you to stop the violence amongst your selves. Please turn off the programed hatred. Release the demons from taking over your souls. Replace hatred with love, brotherly love. Replace the cowardly acts with man hood. Rites of Passage for young men at each phase will assist you in channeling that aggression into a positive life style. This is what is done in African Traditional Cultures.

Please turn to healing your selves instead of killing your selves.

For Mike: I've contacted her [today] and I'm waiting on her call, I'm sure she has many things to tell me and I look forward to hearing them.

Illegal immigration does hurt trade union workers of all ethnicities, however Capitalism the root of "illegal immigrants" [by way of imperialism, foreign investment & collapse] HURTS ALL WORKERS.

Just as Capitalism pits people against each other based on surface differences [race] to compete for resources [think of the Mexican vs Black rivalry, what's it really about besides money and land?].

Thank you (mightymike33tm3) It definitely is my aim, to lead out of the darkness and into the light, for all who may be faced with such a tragedy. We are faced with the realities of gang violence, and racial hatred both in the homes and on the streets. Too often, individuals have no real place to turn for consult and resolve. I just like to share openly how I process and handle real life to life situations.

Our Ancestors, died with so many secrets, leaving generational voids with more questions than answers.

It became a generational trait for the uninformed to lead the uninformed towards paths which often ended tragically.

Buddhism, taught me over 40 years worth, to share the blessings and the process while in the journey. That life is simply life and we must not fear nor be embarrassed about it.

Accept the good parts, the learned parts and respect the process of someone else's journey.

It also teaches us to own and take responsibility for our/your own choices. Make informed decisions! Learn from capable Elders, and remember they are Elders they must know something.

Wow.

There are so many positives on this post from Turqoise, her acknowledgers, to Chad's Mom and her own acknowledgments that can be learned from and passed down generations.

Here this young man was against all odds and seemed to make the most of it regardless of his circumstances. It seems impossible to have accomplished what he did during his short life, but what an inspiration to those who think they have no choices. This man seemed to have none, yet still found a way to remain positive. Truly heartbreaking.

I hope Turquoise takes Chad's mom up on her offer. Turqoise, you definitely have what it takes to be a leader. You are very eloquent, obviously educated, you have the rare combination of higher education with the roots to back up your cause.

I can't speak for the millions in Chad's mom's situation but I can only surmise that if I had lost a son to the streets I would certainly follow your lead to make a change in my neighborhood. Your voice is strong and I hope God guides you to touch people's lives whether that is your purpose or not. To me, you are an inspiration.

I seldom come on here anymore because of the predictable pattern; insanity. I'm glad I logged on today.

We both had one thing in common our sons. I watched this woman have a melt down before my eyes.

I had an advantage over the situation My Buddha Nature was in the tenth state of ENLIGHTENMENT, an no DARKNESS was allowed in to my space. This is the blessing of an elevated life condition after one has chanted NAM-MYOHO-RENGE-KYO for 40 years. Even face to face with the persons mother you still have the ENLIGHTENED COMPASSION that only BUDDAHOOD can gift.

I responded to her with sincerity because she was a mother hooping this was false and miss information about her son. She had not seen him for the 9 months he had been incarcerated. This mother wanted to believe her sons innocence. So she was living in denial.
This is a mothers divine love for her child. This is a natural humanity place for a mothers heart. I understood this space she was in.

I comforted her with my truth, Mother, I sincerely hope it is not your son for your sake. I don't know how it feels to have a son whom you have raised one way to turn another way so negatively distant from your intentions for him and his life. If it proves he is falsely accused, I will support you in prayer. However, if he is guilty of the charges my prayer is for JUSTICE TO BE SERVED! This is not personal it is simply the right thing to happen.

I have no animosity in my heart towards you nor your son. Nothing will return my Son to me, I will live with this. I will always miss my son very deeply. His nieces, and nephews and two sisters will miss him and his friends will miss him, and his loved mate will deeply miss him. His clients will miss him. The community will miss him.

He killed a African Priest, an AWO, and FORTUNE BABY, and enlightened being. Justice will definitely be served on his behalf, this is out of our hands.

Right now I only have love, and peace inside my heart, ASE!

I wanted you to know that an arrest was made and all the gang members are being tried for the death of my son Chad J. Andrew. Justice is being served on his behalf.

I meet with one of the young men's mother while attending one of the court hearings. It was by accident, she over heard my conversation and asked me with a smile, very innocently, "So & So is my son, how are you affiliated with his case?" Very innocently, I looked very deeply into her eyes, and could see a mother, a concerned mother whom also loved her son and was having trouble digesting the realities of his doings. I told her, Sweet heart! your son murdered my son, he didn't just shoot him one time, he unleashed two clips in him. TEARS welled up in her eyes, emotions flooded through her consciousness, I was witnessing a MOTHER, another MOTHER going through stages of LOSS and disbelief and condolences. With tears in her eyes she felt me and said Miss I am soooo very sorry, I am sooo very sorry for your loss. I apologize to you for what my son has done. Please accept my apologies and I offer you and your family my deepest, my very deepest condolences, can we step out side the court room and talk more.

And we did. She felt the GOD in me and my character. I felt her as well mother to mother. I had to look at the fact that we were faced off with the situation at hand.

Any resentment, or negativity or revenge was completely off the page. it was just two women who loved their sons

I realize now, that I am older that Chad more than likely stretched the truth about how he grew up, and his home life to fit the "gangster" stereotype to impress neighborhood girls or in my case to make me more sympathetic or willing to put up with some of the crazy things he'd do and some of the friends of his [I didn't like and who I knew were trouble makers].

So Iya Adunni I want to apologize to you, as I only knew what I was told by Chad.
I never got the chance to meet you despite the fact Chad had brought me to your home [ I never came inside I always waited downstairs because I didn't want to enter someone's home without them knowing], and many times when I called your home I wanted to get to know you to talk to you about him because I cared about him but because of what I was told ...I never thought it'd be possible.

Everyday I think about your son and I wonder if things could have been different if I had done something different as one of his best friends, and as someone he was romantically involved with.

Indeed he was a charismatic, hardworking [I remember him having many many many jobs!] happy person. I now blame his death on bad company, people who sought to steal that happiness and his wonderful aura.

Again, Iya Adunni I want to apologize to you.

Chad went to a friends house well she was a friend at the time for thanks giving one year and met her son who had recording equipment and laid tracks to make a living on the side. He was promoting RAPPERS. Well, heck Chad didn't want to hang out with US in went in the room with the Boys, who turned out to be "Homies" They gave Chad the mic and he wailed it.

I didn' know how charismatic my son was until that young man handed me his tape at his wake.

I am telling you that I had an Awesome Charismatic Multi-talented
Courageous Dynamic Man he was at only 22 years of age. He was an awesome person. And he never let on if he was having a bad time unless you pushed him in a corner and that bull would unleash a rage a bullfighter would run from.

Now It was called to my attention how Chad affected some of the environments that he went into and touched from age 12 until his passing.
There were approx 500 hundred people coming to salute that King who lived a short while graced us all.

Mothers told me stories I could not believe, his friends told me stories I never even imagined in ways he touched their lives through dialogue and encouragements.

Yes I did a fantastic job raising my son and my only regret is that I didn't have enough time with him. I had so much more to share with him.

I am so deeply honored that I was allowed to be his MOM.

Chad got into trouble and he wanted to stay out in the streets. He started rebelling and began breaking away from the life at home.

He wanted family and our family were all dead. He had no grand parents, cousins, uncles, aunts etc. So his friends became his family. He started adapting to them.

He was 13 years old. This time he was rebelling and challenging me. Leaving the house staying out all night and sneaking in during the day eating, showering changing clothes but stayed away. Hanging out all night. He was with a friend whom I realized later was on drugs and smoking, this little boy was about 15. He went to jail for robbery and got 15 years. They got in trouble and were on the "Judge Judy Show"

Chad worked with his Friend and his Mom doing party supplies. He called one time on his way to Fontana, heck he was 12 years old. And he worked hard also for $25 a day. And stayed with these people all night. He never asked me nor did I know who they were or where my son was.

Chad began rapping and was excellent at that and writing his own raps. He was genius at it. But from birth to 4 yrs old he was surrounded by scholastic men and elders.

In order for me to get him off the streets I had to trick him and I went to the police and they arrested him and took him to Juvenile Hall and He went from there to a Group Home in Los Felez where he learned another skill.

Before long he was running the place and setting examples for other kids who really were destitute and had deep psychological wounds. He found him self counseling them and saving lives.

When he went to Camp Gonzales he was saving lives there and counseling boys there as well. He was always shinning what ever the situation he was put in He always came out on top of it.

He came back home and before long the "Street Gang's" were back at it with him trying to pull him in.

He would leave and not be able to get back home because it may have been dangerous to traveled through and he stayed where he was, but He never bothered to call his Mom who was worrying. Yes I was always angry.

I always had those talks with my son about life and school you know his future. Yes I threw him out when he got too disrespectful and Lap tops, money and holes in the walls would happen, Yeah, I threw him out, abide by my rules come home for dinner, come home do your home work, prepare for school tomorrow. In one and out the other.

Chad went to at the share of a friend to Youth Build in Venice where he became a Carpenter and was working on completing High school. He was very happy to attend that school, he became educated on carpentry, dry wall, building houses, he worked on the Senior Building on 76th and Crenshaw, plumber, solar paneling laying concrete, fences, hanging doors, all of it his next step was to Study for a Contractors License.

The next thing I wish to clear up is how Chad Jarmel Grew up and who he was as my son.

My son Chad was born May 4th 1988, in Gardenia Memorial Hospital in the city of Gardenia.

I asked his father to leave when I became aware of his chronic habitual use of herion. I was forced to make a decision, and I did.

Chad became very serious "Uncle" 3 years old. And he took pride in being an uncle even when my relationship with his sisters were challenged.

Chad was enrolled at Marcus Garvey Elementary School on Slauson at age 6. On his first day he was greeted by "Tupac" him self. With the greatest smile Tupac said "How are you young Man" and Chad was very humbled with a huge smile. That was 1993.

Chad was a child in his mothers Beauty Salon and Watched her Barber, and Style men and women's hair.

Chad was my ginny pig and always had the latest flat top, gumbie, high top fade and even then he was a charm to the ladies and a gentlemen from age three and up.

Chad and I were extremely close and I deeply appreciated the wonderful gift God had given me. He couldn't have come at a better time in my my life. I never got tired of my son.

Chad graduated 42nd Street School 6th grade and went on to Audubon. We moved from Leimert Park to 41 St and Normandie and this is where troubles began.

"GANG'S" bullied him at age 11 on up and Chad never let on.

I kept Chad involved in community activities, like jimbe drum classes.

I bet you didn't know he was a "Master Drummer" taught by the best. "Nijite"
"Chief Camura" Chad loved his drums.

Chad was also trained in African martial art "Copiata Angola" studied with "Master Omoade" Chad was challenged by the teachers in his class because he was better than usual in a short time. "Omoade" realized his ability and worked with Chad himself.

Chad was in African studies classes with his mother all his life and he had an understanding of family and culture and developed a deep appreciation for family. He wanted much for his sisters to be a part of our lives and that bothered him that they were not.

It didn't take long for 41 Street wanted some of his juice and they challenged him constantly behind my back of course. Chad never let on that these currencies were happening.

Chad was raised in structure, and routine. And we had chores that we all did well together before fun.

Chad was asthmatic and we spent 5 nights a week in emergency at Children's. I was still clueless as to what he was facing with the pier pressures

Chad started getting in trouble for stupid stuf and before long it was Juvenile Hall trips and courts. Delinquencies etc. One trip too many and the Judge gave him 9 months I believe Camp David Gonzalez in Calabasas.

I am Chad Jarmel Andrew's mother. I will address every one on this blog to set records straight, and to clear up the false
statements mentioned above.

I have been grieving the tradget death of my son.

I will be addressing Grieving Mom, Citizen john, Kesha J, Syscom 3, John, Especially Turquoise, Latrice, Noelle Justice, Chris, Tony 1, wondering, Jennie, and 1X7HxxVerZ All the cowards afraid to mention true identy.

Before I get started I want you to know that I realize you are grieving and that you are working with limitations.

I also realize that you too are suffering a great loss you loss a friend, a possible boy friend what ever it is this magnificent young man was electrifying and touched your hearts deep enough that you are grieving and mourning. Allow me to offer my deepest condolences to you as well.

May the blessings of Olodumare (God) and the Ancestors reach out and touch your hearts with cease of pain and that you receive a healing.

syscom3 i read your comment and its not about a period here or punctuation there as long as i commented from my heart thats what matters i wont get into what you said nor do i care i am so sorry for this young mans family i know all to well how it is to lose a child and suffer all that pain on a daily basis and your comments on this homicide report are really hurtful so let me end on that note before you comment that my son derserved to die because he was a gang member are i was a bad parent stop god bless this family and i hope your heart can begin to heal if possible. so sorry for your loss and i am not blaming the police i am simply saying that when this gas station get crowded with all of these gang members it is the police job to pu an end to the situation and not let it go on every weekend like they do instead of driving thru with sirens on get out of their cars and make these kids leave even the gas station attendants are scared of that mess going on but what can he do when it is just one person in the booth. and they are allways around stopping a homeless person but never at the gas station clearing out the real trouble thats all i am saying concerning the police.

Its crazy how others can take someone else's life and dont feel no type of guilt about it. Chad was a wonderful person the whole 5 months that we were dating. It kills me to know that he is gone. Chad told me about his life but anyone that knew him wouldnt know what was going on in his because he always walked down the street with a smile on his face and his head held high, Chad wouldnt let nothing keep him down because he was trying to make something out of hisself and get out of these streets. Its funny because one night we were having this serious talk about life and he knew what was coming but I told him dont talk like that because you are here now and that is what matters the most. I'm so glad my post didn't go unread....

I [was born in Los Angeles and moved away after the Rodney King Riots] ,grew up in a high class neighborhood in the Eastern Bay Area, I didn't move [back] to L.A till 2005...My mother raised me in a better neighborhood (while my dad was in jail) so I didn't have to witness (let alone hear about) the things she saw growing up in L.A (even though she also grew up in a better neighborhood in Los Angeles)

When I came to L.A/Inglewood I was picked on... because of my ethnicity (Puerto Rican& West Indian) and the fact I was more articulate than my classmates. Long story short... I became involved in the UCLA Gear Up Poetry club at Inglewood High school and later began reading poems and doing public speaking at the Santa Monica playhouse speaking out against the atrocities I witnessed during my 2 years (YES ONLY TWO) at Inglewood High School.

If people want change... we have to give as much as we can ( I'm not speaking monetary giving either) to help the cause.

Parenting classes, better sex education & more access to birth control (to prevent out of wedlock & teen pregnancies) , more after school programs (so many after school programs are being cut in our schools in California thus taking away many Urban Youth's safe havens from the streets!)

People are saying that these children need father figures...well what about a Paternal Program like Big Brother&Big Sister...but only one that gives children a Surrogate father!

There are so many ideas I could bounce around...but without anyone supporting them beyond words no action will ever be taken. When people see someone trying to do something like what I'm doing in their neighborhood they never open their door to them...they shoo them away!

Open your hearts,your arms, your doors, community centers,churches, and business fronts ....
everything must change in time.

Turquoise and Chris you are both right on the mark. The black family has really broken down. These young black boys now fail to understand what it means to really be a man. They seem to think that taking someone’s life makes them a man. They only live for the moment, sell drugs and make some fast money, but choose not to look beyond that. They can plainly see that selling drugs leads to prison or early death and that's it. The black neighborhoods they live in were bought and built by their grandfathers and great grand fathers, real men, solid men who worked two or three jobs to provide for their families. Their payoff was being a homeowner and a good provider for their family and the pride that goes along with it. Hard work seems to be a thing of the past in the black community. These young guys want everything nice but don't want to work for it. They get a girl pregnant, she has his baby and gets government housing and he lives with her for free. So ladies please choose your mate wisely, think about what kind of provider and role model they will be for your children

What you all fail to realize is..that no matter what politician is office...and no matter who pleads to people ...it us up to the individual themselves to decide whether they want to take part in violence and gang affiliations. Stop blaming the lack of jobs and the education system...

The change starts at home with the parenting. Chad was a foster child for many years because his mother was using drugs.. he bounced from foster homes, to his older sister's houses...to his mom's house years later..and then between friends' houses & the streets.
In these streets and amongst these so called friends... he met members of the Neighborhood 40's crips... who he began to consider his family. They gave him food, they loaned him clothes... they gave him rides places..and some of the guy's parents even gave Chad jobs.

If Chad had grown up in a more nurturing environment...I probably would of never met him, & dated him.... (I met him as he wandered the streets one night while he was kicked out of his sister's house) ...if he would of had a nurturing family... he wouldn't of turned to the gangs for familial relationships!

The politicians providing a quality educational environment probably would of ensured that Chad would of graduated high school...enabling him to get a better job..but as I said before.. it all starts at home! Without good parenting an educational system is worthless... Parents help kids with their homework..parents emphasize how important an education is! Parents... teach their kids before kids reach school age...

Change starts at home.

This hurts my heart as I'm reading it... I was engaged to Chad..he was my high school sweetheart... in 2007 I moved away from Los Angeles and later got a job with the federal government in Northern California. I begged him to move up to Nor. Cal with me...but he wanted to stay in L.A because it was the only place he ever knew. Chad wasn't really a gang banger...he just associated and hung out with stupid people who wanted to be gang bangers..and were gang bangers.

I shouldn't have to come online to find out what the hell happened to someone I loved...someone I had only lost contact with for a few days... It's ridiculous! And for the people who say stop snitching ... I want you to try and tell someone that when IT'S YOU who's lost someone you loved.

Don't sit here and rant about the police not doing anything...sit here and rant about PARENTS who don't teach their children the difference between right and wrong..and when they're supposed to do the right thing! THEN MAYBE! JUST MAYBE we all can have a little justice.

i am disgusted by this i live right by this i heard all those gunshots and i went outside to see what was going on i saw this young man laying in the gas station not covered up and he laid there up until 7:30 am it sickens me that police can allow our children to be murdered like this who ever did this is a coward and you will be revealed because you are going to talk about this i feel for his mom i also lost my son right across the street from this gas station every weekend it would be a gangfest at this valero gas station and the police would not break it up and at this time when this young man was there it was not alot of people i saw the other mom run through the yellow tape and ask about her child the police told her to calm down it was just a car riddled with bullets and her son had been transported to the hospital but if she would of looked a few feet in front of her she would of also seen that mam it was not just a car it was the other young man's body laying there by the gas pump how cold were the officers and i watched the detective put 12 peices of paper down marking shell casings this is so sick why would anyone want to end this young man's life look at the last poster who left a comment he is a gang member his name says it all i wonder was it some one from hoover who killed this young man cowards are running so rampant all around here these days and to take a life is so personal you have decided to be judge and jury and end somebody's life all because you have no life and when it is your time it will be just as rough for you this young man had someone who loved and cared for him just like you have someone who cares and love you why is all i would like to ask had i been outside when these shots rang out i would have saw you and screamed dont you dare do what you are fixing to do the police knocked on my door and asked did i see anything i did not but i wish i could have saw those two suspects creeping outta of that alley i would have hollered at the top of my lungs that i see what you are fixing to do and hoped that would have saved that young man, animals is all i can call them how do you eat and sleep also i believe that there was some young women who kept driving back by at the time the gas station was taped off to see and when they drove by again for the 3rd time they had some guys in their back seat looking i heard folks like to come back to see the damage done well ladies in the green explorer i seen you drive by all the times you did and also with your friends in your back seat looking suspect dont worry your day will be soon god has a way of prevailing himself and it's a matter of time believe that.
