Daniel Castro, 21 [Updated]
Daniel Castro, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, June 5, in the 200 block of West 2nd Street in San Pedro, according to Los Angeles coroner's records.
Castro was with his brother helping their mother move late Thursday evening when they were approached by an unknown male Latino, said LAPD Harbor Detective David Alvarez, who handled the investigation.
The brothers shared a cigarette with the stranger while being told by the individual that the street "was his area" and that they needed to "get back into the house," Alvarez said.
The suspect left the two men, but returned a short time later with a gun and shot at Castro and his brother about 12:01 a.m., Alvarez said. Castro was hit in the torso, while his brother escaped the gunfire by hiding behind a vehicle.
Authorities were called and Castro was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he died at 12:43 a.m., according to coroner's records.
Through several eye witnesses, investigators identified Edward Benavidez, a 22-year-old Latino, as the shooter and arrested him the day of the incident. Benavidez was a known gang member, Alvarez said.
According to the felony complaint provided by the district attorney's office, Benavidez has been charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
In 2006, Benavidez was convicted of carrying a loaded firearm.
His next court appearance is scheduled for June 10 at the Long Beach Superior Court. He is currently being held at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic in lieu of $2-million bail.
[For the record: The coroner's office initially incorrectly reported that Castro was found in an alley with several gunshot wounds.]
