Donta Jackson, 20
Donta Jackson, a 20-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, Sept. 27 at the intersection of East 92nd Street and Fir Avenue in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
The shooting occurred about 7:38 p.m. as Jackson was walking on the sidewalk near the home of a family member, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Dave Coleman.
Investigators believe Jackson was walking back from a nearby convenience store. Plastic bags of water and a few groceries were found near where he fell, Coleman said.
Witnesses told investigators they saw two black men approach Jackson in the intersection, near the 92nd Street Elementary School.
They then heard gunfire and saw the men run into a dark-colored Infiniti car and drive away, north on Fir Avenue, Coleman said.
Jackson was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:29 p.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner's records.
Coleman said Jackson lived several miles west of the neighborhood and had come that evening to visit a family member.
Jackson was not a gang member, Coleman said, but investigators believe the shooting was gang related. There are three gangs operating in that neighborhood, he said, and others nearby.
"There was a lot of gang activity — shootings — going on that night," Coleman said.
"We learned that LAPD had shootings in their area too, so this may have been a result of their gang war. He may have been an innocent bystander. It was senseless to say the least; all he was doing was walking on the street."
