Dontae Emile Harrison, a 31-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, July 22, in the 11100 block of South Vermont Avenue, in the Vermont Vista neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Deputies were called to the scene about 1:30 a.m. They discovered Harrison lying in the southbound lane nearest the center divider of the wide street, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson.

Harrison was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:22 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Rosson said Harrison was a documented gang member from Long Beach, and investigators believe the shooting may be gang-related.

Several people reported hearing gunfire, but no one has reported seeing the shooting, Rosson said. Investigators don’t know what Harrison was doing in the area, which is a mix of small businesses and residences.

After looking at footage from nearby security cameras, investigators believe Harrison was walking on the west side of Vermont Avenue when he was shot, Rosson said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
