Eric Nicanor, a 15-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Nov. 8, in the 1500 block of Hoover Street in Pico-Union, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 6:45 p.m. Sunday, Nicanor was standing in a small group in front of an apartment building when a man rode up on a bike and shot at him and a 16-year-old, said Los Angeles Police Department Detective Ray Martinez.

“It seems as though they were targeted,” Martinez said.

The assailant then fled on the bicycle. Nicanor was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

The 16-year-old also was taken to a hospital and was being treated for his injuries. Police do not yet know why the assailant opened fire and authorities are looking for the gunman.

Eric Nicanor sat in my Period 5 English class just a few months ago. I remember the side of Room 216, his broad, brave smile, and eagerness to grow up. He embraced life and all of its expectations and anticipations, always showing the world that bright, hopeful smile. As we looked at literature and reflected on what it means to be a human being, my class addressed issues of justice and injustice, humanity vs. inhumanity, how an 'injustice to one is an injustice to all." I miss you, Eric; you didn't deserve the jagged injustce of this world. You always had a look on your face as if you couldn't wait to meet life's challenges and record its infinite beauties. You seemed to be ready for anything life introduced to you.....it's gentle moments, its mountaintops, its Alpine meadows, paths to somewhere and nowhere. Now, you're gone. Soon students will return to tell me, "Miss, did you hear what happened to Eric." I wish I had never heard. I want to remember you with that big, translucent smile, tenacious and gushing with wonder, vulnerable yet fearless. I'm sorry, Eric, that I could teach you to distinguish between man's humanity vs. inhumanity....yet, I could not teach you to be safe from those who shed innocent blood. May God have mercy on the Cain who took your life. I will never forget you, nor my Natasha, nor my Hana, nor my litany of life lost....my students who came to class and then left me to go to Heaven. .I am broken.
