A story for every victim

Gregory Samuel Torres, 50

Gregory Samuel Torres, a 50-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Oct. 19, in the 1600 block of West Arrow Highway in Irwindale, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Irwindale police were called to the industrial area at 6:56 p.m. regarding gunshots and a shooting victim, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

The officers found Torres on the south sidewalk, across the highway from a ballfield, Mendoza said.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Investigators don’t have any eyewitnesses to the shooting, Mendoza said. They think Torres was walking on the sidewalk when he was shot, but they don’t know whether the shooter was in a vehicle, as was earlier reported, or on foot, Mendoza said.

“There are a lot of people who congregate in the riverbed north of the highway,” Mendoza said. “The suspect might have been on foot and run into the river area.”

Torres had a mailing address in Baldwin Park, but it’s not clear whether he was living along the riverbed, Mendoza said. He did not work in the area, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
