A story for every victim

James Edson Gillis, 87

James Edson Gillis, an 87-year-old white man, was found dead Friday, Sept. 5, in the 31900 block of Emerald Lane in Castaic, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after 9 a.m., Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were called to a local Walgreens because a woman walked in and told employees to call 911, said Lt. Eddie Hernandez with the department.

Before deputies arrived, the woman left the store and walked down the street. Deputies found her and she allegedly said she killed her father, Hernandez said.

Deputies drove to the one-story home and found Gillis inside a bedroom suffering from stab wounds. Gillis was pronounced dead at 10:19 a.m. at the scene, said Ed Winter, the assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.

The daughter, later identified as Denise Ann Gillis, a 48-year-old white woman, was charged Sept. 9 with one count of murder with an allegation that she used a knife, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors said the woman shared the home with her father and had wounded him the previous day.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
