Jeremiah Zapata, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, April 10, in the 2400 block of South Raymond Avenue in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Zapata was shot about 12:15 a.m. after getting into a dispute with a suspect who opened fire and then fled on foot.

The victim was found lying on the sidewalk with several wounds to his upper body. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said LAPD Officer Karen Rayner.

Authorities have not identified a suspect but said the shooting was believed to be gang-related.

Jeremiah was a bright young man, who I will miss for the rest of my life. Words can not describe the frustration and anger I feel inside for such a senseless loss. I first met Jeremiah when he was 12, and the first thing he told me was to always respect the family, and I took his words to heart and have done so every day of my life since. I watched him grow up over the years, and I will forever miss his "Oh wassup Matt?" when he would come to the house. I will miss his collection of hats that he loved so much. This is so sad, as I saw him just a few days before he died. He was happy and I was glad to see him smile. He had a long future ahead of him, but now his future is with God. I look forward to one day meeting him again in Heaven. RIP Maya, I love you more than you knew, and will miss you for the rest of my life. RIP JPZ 4/10/11
