A story for every victim

Jinsu Lee, 19

Jinsu Lee, a 19-year-old Asian man, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, a day after suffering blunt force trauma in the 13300 block of Glenoaks Boulevard in Sylmar, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

A 17-year-old South Korean exchange student, who was not identified because of his age, was arrested on suspicion of assault after Lee died of head injuries, authorities said.

The two exchanged blows about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, at First Lutheran High School, where they were both attending a physical education class, police said.

A law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said initial indications show Lee started the fight, and the exchange student responded with a few blows.

Lee was taken by paramedics to Olive View UCLA Medical Center for his injuries. He was transferred to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he remained in critical condition until he died the next day, authorities said.

The 17-year-old boy was taken to juvenile hall. Los Angeles County prosecutors said they will not make a formal decision on whether to file charges until they get a completed coroner’s report on the cause of Lee’s death.

Coroner's officials said Tuesday it was determined that Lee died from blunt force trauma to the head and his death was ruled a homicide.
