Miguel Ortega
Miguel Ortega, a 37-year-old Latino, was found dead Monday, May 18, in the 5700 block of Fortuna in Central-Alameda, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a “rubbish fire” on a sidewalk shortly after 3:30 a.m., said LAPD Det. David Torres. A neighbor who had seen the fire called authorities, Torres said.
Police believe that Ortega was driven to the location and dumped on the sidewalk. An autopsy found that Ortega died of multiple blunt-force injuries, said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.
A medical examiner could not determine the race or age of the victim, Winter said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD’s Newton detectives at (323) 846-6556. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
Update, June 1: The coroner's office has identified John Doe #107 as Miguel Ortega, 37.
