Jolynn Raeanne Finlay, a 24-year-old Latina, was fatally shot on Friday, Jan. 17, in the 18800 block of Crocker Avenue in Carson, according Los Angeles County medical examiner-coroner records.
Finlay was sleeping in her boyfriend's house at 12:18 p.m. when someone broke through a window in another room and tried to rob her boyfriend of money and drugs, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.
The intruder was carrying a gun, and during the scuffle the gun went off, sending a bullet through the wall, Alfred said. The intruder ran away to a car where his three alleged accomplices were waiting.
The boyfriend went into the next room and discovered the bullet had struck Finlay in the head as she lay sleeping, Alfred said.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:37 p.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators arrested one of the boyfriend's acquaintances, Hollis Morrell Davis, 24, on suspicion of murder. He and his alleged accomplices—Anthony Bolden, 23, Johrod Donald Ying, 33, and William Joseph Jones, 23, were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, according to court records. Davis and Ying were also charged with being felons in possession of a firearm.
Davis was charged on Feb. 13, but his arraignment was continued to March 3 in Room 12 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Compton. The other three have pleaded not guilty. Their next court hearings are scheduled for April 7 in room SCD at the Compton courthouse.
