Jose Luis Horta, 34
Jose Luis Horta, a 34-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, June 20, in the 5300 block of South Figueroa Street in Vermont Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Horta was walking his dog about 1:45 a.m. south on South Figueroa Street when a brown van pulled up and a person inside fired multiple times, said Los Angeles Police Det. Chris Barling.
Horta was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:41 a.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman.
Officers nearby heard the gunshots and found Horta on the sidewalk. Officers then pursued the van, which embarked on a chase that ended when the van crashed into a pole at South Sepulveda Boulevard and Lincoln Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport, Barling said.
Eric Richard Sailor, a 22-year-old Latino, Daniel Alonzo Martinez, a 20-year-old Latino, and Julio Reyes Pena, a 17-year-old Latino, were arrested on suspicion of murder that night. A gun was recovered at the scene.
Sailor, Martinez and Pena were each charged with one count of murder and robbery June 24, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Pena was charged as an adult. Martinez was also charged with one count of unlawful firearm activity. Sailor was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.
