Leticia Delatorre Castillo, 44
Leticia Delatorre Castillo, a 44-year-old Latina, was shot and killed Wednesday, April 20, in the 13000 block of Los Angeles Street in Baldwin Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s office records.
Castillo was at work at La Blanquita Market, standing near the checkout counter, when Raul Garcia Martinez, her estranged husband, walked into the store about 8:13 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
Martinez, a 47-year-old Latino, walked up to his wife of 20 years, shot her in the head, then shot himself in the head as her co-workers stood nearby, Mendoza said.
The husband didn't say anything before he fired, Mendoza said. A gun was found at the scene.
Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:22 a.m., according to coroner’s records. Martinez was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead two days later, April 22, at 11:33 a.m., according to coroner's records.
The couple had four children, three grown and one teenager, Mendoza said. Martinez had just filed a restraining order against his wife, for reasons investigators don’t know, Mendoza said. The order had not yet been served.
“They were obviously having some domestic-related problems,” Mendoza said. “We believe they were going through a separation, he was unhappy about it, and he committed this wild act.”
Coworkers remembered Castillo as being quiet, nice and polite, The Whittier Daily News reported.
The Baldwin Park Police Department has asked the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau to help with the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
