Man charged in 2016 killing in Green Meadows

A man has been charged with murder in the July 2016 slaying of  DeAndre Hughes, who was shot as he stood outside his home in Green Meadows, according to authorities.

Davion Harris, a 31-year-old black man, pleaded not guilty on Jan. 11 to one count of murder, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Harris is due back in court Jan. 26.

Physical evidence links Harris to the killing, said Los Angeles Police Det. Nathan Kouri. Investigators declined to comment further about the evidence in the case.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. on July 17, 2016, Hughes, 30, was standing outside his home with another person when a gunman approached the home from the sidewalk and began shooting, police previously told The Times. Hughes was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Hughes worked at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as an environmental services technician and was remembered as a man with a gregarious personality. His mother, Barbara Pritchett-Hughes, was featured in a Dec. 2016 article about mothers who have lost two children to violence.

Hughes’ brother, Dovon Harris, 15, was shot and killed in 2007.
