Marcella Byrd, a 57-year-old black female, died Saturday, Jan. 19, after being shot in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

My mother was a beautiful person inside and out. She loved her children and cared about people. She loved living in Long Beach that's why she never left after moving there in the summer of 1977. She was a nurse for twenty-two years before retiring. She is truly missed. Mental illness is a serious social issue we have in this country. Since my moms death thirteen years ago, we are still having incidents involving police and people with mental illnesses. However, i do believe police departments have made significant progress on how they handle these situations, all cases don't end in someone being killed. We do need the police when we are in trouble. I think in order to add on to the progress they're making, police departments should have better communication with their communities they are servicing. I do appreciate Long Beach Police Department for making improvements in their department after my moms death. Her spirit will continue to live on....
