Mayela Valdez Garcia, 41

Mayela Garcia, a 41-year-old Latina, was fatally shot Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the 6000 block of South Vermont Avenue in Vermont-Slauson, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Garcia had left the Coin Laundry Lavanderia about 10:05 p.m. to empty some trash when she was approached by an unknown Latino and was shot in the head, according to an LAPD news release.

Paramedics were called, and Garcia was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m.

The shooter was last seen running north toward 60th Street, officials said.

Investigators have not made an arrest in connection with the case. A motive for the shooting remains unknown.
