A story for every victim

Ramon Paredes Jr., 22

Ramon Paredes Jr., a 22-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, Jan. 1, at the intersection of South Rebecca Street and West Fourth Street in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Paredes appeared to be riding a bicycle when he was struck by gunfire sometime after midnight, said Pomona Police Sgt. Marcus Perez.

A passerby discovered Paredes’ body about 1 a.m. and called the police, Perez said. Paredes was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:10 a.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner records.

No one reported seeing the shooting, and investigators have no information about suspects or a motive, Perez said.

Neighbors told investigators they heard gunfire in the area shortly after midnight but assumed it was people shooting their guns in celebration of the New Year, Perez said.

Investigators don’t believe Paredes was a gang member, Perez said, but he was wearing a baseball cap with a “P” on the front — common attire for some Pomona gang members — so he might have been mistaken for a Pomona gang member by his assailant, police said.

However, investigators have no evidence that the shooting was gang-related, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Pomona Police Department at (909) 622-1241 or (909) 620-2085. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
